Makeney Hall has all the special ingredients needed for the perfect New Year bridge holiday. The elegantly decorated hotel is situated in the Derbyshire countryside close to the village of Belper. It was originally built as a Victorian country mansion and maintains many charming original period features and is set in 6 acres of landscaped gardens.
We dine in its beautiful conservatory and, after our bridge sessions in the spacious Milford Suite, we can relax with our newfound friends in the cosy bar. Not to be missed is our visit to Chatsworth! Dressed in all its festive finery, the house is a real sight to behold, with the wonderful Christmas displays throughout.

Your Bridge Programme
Your duplicate bridge will be available every evening between 7:45pm and 11:15pm. We endeavour to vary these evening sessions, balancing between teams and pairs and featuring at least one Swiss event during a two-week break.
Bridge will also be offered some mornings or afternoons. These sessions are normally given over to open pairs/teams.
Masterpoints are awarded on evening bridge sessions, and on day sessions with over 5 tables.
We also try to include interesting bridge seminars as part of your programme, hosted by your EBU-qualified director.
During your holiday, nothing is obligatory, and you can play in as many or as few bridge sessions as you wish. We don’t forget you are on holiday and our bridge programme also allows time to relax, giving you the opportunity to explore the surrounding area.
Make your own way to the Makeney Hall Hotel and meet your bridge team.
We enjoy dinner this evening with a glass of house wine, followed by evening bridge.
Today we board the coach for a visit to Chatsworth House. Home to the Dukes of Devonshire for many generations, the land was purchased by Elizabeth and William Cavendish in 1549 for £600. This was the Home of Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, better known as Bess of Hardwick. During Her lifetime, she married 4 times and rose to a position of great power and wealth. In 1547 she married William Cavendish, Treasurer of the King’s Chamber. They had eight children and made Chatsworth their home. A later marriage to George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, in 1567, saw Bess become Countess of Shrewsbury. Over the following generations, the house was transformed into what we see today.
On arrival, we explore this stunning house, which never fails to impress with its wonderful, festive-themed Christmas display. You will be mesmerised as you walk through beautifully decorated rooms, each one a sight to behold.
We return to our hotel this afternoon, with time to relax before our evening meal, followed by bridge.
